Welcome to Homeschooling1.com! I’m so happy you’re here and I want to take a second to introduce myself. My name is Courtney and I’m a happily married homeschooling mommy of one. I have one child, my beautiful daughter who turned 5 in June. She’s doing Kindergarten and 1st grade lessons this year. She’s a whiz with numbers and anything S.T.E.M related so we are quite the hands-on homeschool!
I knew I wanted to homeschool all the way back when I was pregnant and I’ve been researching home education for years. At first I thought homeschooling was only for religious households or (don’t laugh) “cult” type families. When I started doing research and talking online to a lot of homeschooling families, I leaned differently.
Homeschooling has evolved over the last few years and now families from all walks of life are choosing to educate their children at home. There are secular households, religious households, unschoolers, eclectic homeschoolers and soooo many more. When I learned that homeschooling wasn’t a one size fits all approach I got so excited and realized that YES! Homeschooling is the right choice for us. I just didn’t expect there to be such a lack of information and support for secular singleton families.. That’s why I created this site.
This site is for secular homeschoolers. It seems like every time I shop for curriculum I find it so difficult to find lessons that aren’t faith based. I did more research and it took a lot of work, but I found a lot of secular curricula. I wanted to share this information for any families who are having a hard time finding this on their own.
There is also a forum on this site. I hope that you take advantage and introduce yourself. I’d love to get to know more singleton homeschoolers so we can share thoughts, ideas, parenting struggles and accomplishments throughout the course of our homeschool journeys.
So yes, I hope that was a good start. Again, WELCOME! I’m happy to have you visit my site and please visit the forum and sign up!
For those who need more information regarding homeschooling, below I’ve written a small introduction about the basics. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need further assistance regarding homeschooling.
If you’re new to homeschooling, this is your first year or you’re just curious about what the deal is with homeschooling….. This is a great place to start learning!
Things we DON’T do as homeschooling families:
-We DON’T lock our children in the basement and force them to read century old lessons.
-We DON’T hate society and teach our children that we’re better than children who go to school.
-We DON’T keep our children locked up in the house all day. Quite the opposite actually.
-We DON’T judge others based on religious beliefs. Some of us aren’t religious at all. Every family is different.
-We DON’T force our views on others and do not appreciate it when others can’t return the favor.
Now onto some positive points. What we DO as homeschooling families:
-We DO encourage parents to learn as much as possible about homeschooling methods and choose what’s best for your family. Some like to follow a curriculum to the T, some families practice unschooling, some families prefer child led learning. There are MANY different ways to home school and that’s what makes it such a wonderful option.
-We DO make sure that we follow the homeschooling laws that are required by our state. Every state has a different set of rules that homeschoolers must follow. For more information please visit this page.
-We DO get involved with our community.
-We DO enjoy every moment with our children. I think now of moms who can’t wait until their children are on the bus to school and they see it as an escape or a vacation. I’m quite the opposite. I love involving my daughter in my daily activities, which are mostly centered around things that interest us both and my daughter would rather be out and about in the city with me than stuck in a classroom all day. For us it’s a win win!
